I hopped into my new yellow wellies excited to break them in. The socios of my town were required to attend the ´minga´(mandated community project workday) but I just wanted to enjoy to some bonding time with my community and improve my machete skills. I showed up hoping to blend-in, which was near impossible. So, I found a friend and joined the weed massacre.
I was thoroughly engrossed by the tremendous amount of sweat my body was producing in a short timespan. An Aguinda brother approached me with a look of pity on his face and offered to sharpen my machete (apparently it was shamefully dull). I observed the process so I might be self-sufficient in future mingas.
During the five minutes I stepped aside to `afilar´my machete, my friend Lidia had almost finished the section of weeds when she halted, screeched `¡culebra!´and skipped away with fright. Two high school boys scurried over to extract the culebra (which means snake) and show-off their fearlessness of the baby boa constrictor...which I later learned are venomless.
